WWDC18 Event Snapshot: What was it about?

The Day 1 of Apple’s WWDC18 was found to be quite astounding as it talked about reinforced upgrades for Mac, iPhone, Apple TV and Apple Watch but there was nothing mentioned about the iPad. And especially, the keynote was staggered when Craig Federighi, the Apple’s Head Honcho, made a shrewd but a bona fide jab right in the face of Google’s Android, the Apple’s iOS neck and neck competitor.

Federighi quoted, ‘a whopping 81% of all iOS devices globally are powered by the latest iOS firmware version, i.e. iOS 11’. Alongside, he also throws a jab straight in the face of Android by quoting that a meagre 6% of the global Android device pool operates on the Google’s latest Android firmware, i.e. Oreo (8.x).

Though the figures were found to be slightly over-exaggerated after taking a look at the Stats Dashboard of Google, only 5.7% (4.9% operating on Android 8.0 while the remaining 0.8% operates on Android 8.1) of all active Android devices are actually powered by Android Oreo.

On the other hand, the App Store dashboard of Apple unveils that iOS 11 is powering 76% (as was recorded on 22nd April) of all active iOS device pool which is now hiked to 81%.

Long Awaited iOS Announcements

With the end of the bout of the iOS and Android face-off, the Apple Officials then opened bouts of several announcements regarding the upgrades in quality and stability of firmware in various iOS devices in addition with new features. Here is the glimpse of it.

1. Mac upgrades

On the contrary of what was speculated about the MacOS and iOS, that they were destined to be merged in the upcoming upgrades, Federighi (at WWDC18) made it absolutely clear that it isn’t the case for the time being. Instead, what is focused on are bringing the Stocks, Home, News and Voice Memo app to the Mac computers. Moreover, the last year’s completely refurnished iPhone’s App Store is coming to Macs. Furthermore, Microsoft Office 365 will also be available on Mac with the addition of App Store.

• Similar to that of iPhone’s ‘Night Mode’ the macOS Mojave includes the Dark Mode functionality which will switch all the white backgrounds to the black.
• Moreover, users no longer have to worry about adjusting the brightness of their monitor during different day light timings; cause the all new Dynamic Desktop does that for you automatically. Isn’t that interesting?
• That’s not all yet, with the feasibility to capture screenshots, you can now capture videos as well.
• Finder now includes a gallery view to help users to look for their photos, videos or documents in a much better way.
• Quite astonishingly, the new Safari has enabled the user with the power to limit the cookie collection and ad tracking. Moreover, it can alert the users if organizations like Facebook or other are attempting to do so.

2. iPhone upgrades

Though the Mac upgrades have revealed astonishingly appealing and secure features, the most exciting bout of revealing upgrades was for the iPhone. The latest new firmware version iOS 12, for both old and new iOS device, will boost the speed and performance of the iPhones much more than its predecessor iOS 11. • Gone are the days of limiting video calls to individuals, now you can make group calls over Facetime (32 people at max in a single call).
• All new ‘Sleeping’ feature is incorporated in the DND mode that allows users to automatically or manually turn off notifications till the time you wake up. Moreover, with the new Instant Tuning feature users can now mute or turn off the notifications right from the lock screen. Notification threading is another new feature packed within iOS 12.
• With the all new Photo features, users have the more control over organizing and searching their photos in the Photo Library. For instance, the photos you capture at events like a concert or hitting a bar/club will be grouped automatically with their respective event type. Making it easier to search for your photos.
• Moreover, iMessage has a new photo sharing feature which is protected with end-to-end encryption eliminating the security concerns. With this feature you need not to share the photo captured with your friend at a dinner, this photo feature will automatically sync the photos with the respective friend and also syncs the photos taken from his/her iPhone on that particular dinner.
• Introducing the new ‘Screen Time’ and ‘App Limits’ with the new iOS 12 that empowers the users to track or manage the app usage or can even shutdown the over-usage apps.
• Siri just has got a few minor updates with which users can create usual tasks or routines or reminders. Moreover, Siri has the new ability to suggest things depending upon users’ habits, like ordering a jug of juice or a cup of coffee in the mornings.

3. Apple Watch updates

With all the fresh stuff introducing in other gadgets this year, Apple watch didn’t leave behind. Allowing the users to enjoy from web browsing to walkie talkie features, watchOS 5 is going to be the talk of the town. With an advanced device on their wrist, the users who are runners can now control information like pace, metrics or automatic detection when one will begin a workout. Besides, Siri will be introduced with deeper voice controls.

4. Apple TV upgrades

The good news about Apple TV users is they are going to get Stocks app and brand new wallpapers. Above all, with just using their cable account, the users will be in a position to log into their Apple TV device and post that they will be logged into other TV apps automatically.

5. Other

Apple has also brought to notice the Memoji feature which you can say as a combination of ‘Me’ (the user) + ‘Emoji’. This Memoji will be combined with Bitmoji whose purpose is to map your face and imitate your facial expressions in your cartoon version. It has disclosed new characters like ghost or koala that can be even used when FaceTiming with friends. All in all, these cartoon characters will say everything you can’t.

For vehicles on the other hand, the users will be capable of adding third-party navigation apps including Google News with the touchscreen software in cars by Apple’s operating system.
